Thank you for sharing this whole process, Bob! Believe it or not, I started doing the same thing to my shop just yesterday. First came feeling the urge to change my small and cluttered shop.I started by sorting out all the containers full of 'junk', clearing out all things that really don't belong in the shop anyway. Next will be making a new stand for my contractor table saw (although leveling the concrete floor might come before this). We'll see where this will take me, but watching you going through a similar process is helpful!

Bob have you investigated what solutions a factory workshop can use for dust enclosure in work areas ? I've seen industrial enclosures made of PVC strip curtains that looked awesome. Benefits : no masonry needed, ability to reconfigure the workshop easily, and as it's transparent you're not missing on natural lighting in your shop.

A big organization thing for me if you have multiple work areas, get duplicate tools, dedicated for those areas, money permitting. If you find yourself in the electronics room needing a wrench for a pcb standoff and you have to get it from the garage, the electronics area needs a wrench. Helps keeps tools from getting scattered about and keeps your workflow and brain uncluttered

Different? Oh you do not have 60 hand planes and even more molding planes in your shop? No rack of 40 saws? When imagining storage room for myself I always repeat the idea of two or more hallways with shelves on both sides. Like those racks that move but the moving for space is not necessary. I hope you make this a series and cover the boring stuff to give us all motivation for drywall and other jobs that can suck. Double doors for the wood shop would be amazing. The doors in grocery stores and Target. Thin but durable plastic double doors with windows to see people coming. Big rubber astragal on both edges.

And hence the real issue of organizing a shop or garage! It’s a vicious cycle and when one change is made it usually negatively impacts another lol. A couple suggestions, more cabinets for custom storage and paint! I think painting is one inexpensive way to make your storage and what not seem more cohesive and organized. Something about cabinets, workbenches, etc all being a constant color seems to make them almost disappear 🫥 in away. A guy I think that you’d get inspiration from is Hooked On Wood here on YT. I like how he uses ply to build up benches, etc. but he paints or uses colored mdf products to keep a consistent tone inside his shop and it’s so well organized. His drawer system is pretty slick too. But I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoy these very videos because my garage is an absolute hoarding nightmare because it’s too easy to add tools yet very difficult to organize and find time to build to organize like in my instance. I’ve got to start somewhere though and these do help quite a bit. I have to add as others asked where your team and business are, I miss these types of videos. I’ve watched for years now and my favorite are these in your shop building practical stuff although the occasional Star Wars inspired builds are helpful too. My Brother is Star Wars obsessed and a few years ago I made your comment shaped shelves for him that he absolutely loves so thank you!

The wood shop definitely looks so much cleaner now! I forget who said this but in their miter station build they had the t-track imbedded on the work surface and not in an extension fence (they didn’t build any) because the only fence they need is the fence built into the saw because it needs to be square to the saw blade.

Great video Bob. It gave me a lot to think about in the current re-organization of my 2-car garage/shop (which still has to hold 1 car...). I recently sold the 3-piece former bedroom dresser furniture that was my entire drawer space, but then I had no organization to store all the different categories of 'stuff' I was mostly keeping in those 14 drawers, like glue guns and glue; caulk and adhesive tubes; Kreg stuff; gloves; sandpaper; tape (all kinds). So I bought a bunch of those Sterilite tote boxes of different sizes to fit all the stuff. Once I get a new work bench there will be space for some of it, but I think a lot of these tote boxes will be permanent storage. As to planning the garage layout, I've taken the measurements of everything as you did, but I'm not into 3-D modeling on a computer, so mine will be 2-D, but twice - once for an overhead floor layout view, and another one for 'wall view''. They'll be 3 of those. I'll used poster board to cut out the various shapes of the items. Scale will be 1/2" = 1 foot, done on 11' x 17" graph paper.

Stacking all of those organizers is a bad idea. Having one in each cubby is a better way to go, because inevitably, the thing you need will (almost) always bee toward the bottom and then you have to remove all the containers stacked on top to get to the one you want. Cubbies bypass all of that.

Maybe you should have wall mounted points in you shop for a camera that way you dont need to use a tripod. And it can give you a consistent shot each time. Less thinking about if something is in frams and more hit record and continue to make things. Maybe the camera can be on a small arm for adjustments or angles.

I will throw out my method. I have a one car garage shop. So maximizing space is important. And i do alot, work on cars, cnc, laser cutter, woodworking. And 3d printing and model building but thats inside the house. Anyways, you dont want a storage room, they always turn into a large junk drawer. Your storage for your various aspects of adhd fueled shop needs to be next to what its used for. Like my miter saw stand is also a lumber cart, like up to 8ft lumber and slabs. I the end of it open and three tiers. Front if cart is cabinet doors with couple inchs of inside storage. Cnc(4ft by 4ft) cart has 1/3rd of it is my dust collection compressor ect with the front of it is drawers with bits and all that. Other 2/3s of the bottom is storage for up to 3ftx4ft sheet goods standing up. Laser i have all the materials in that area. Ect. The more you try to toss all storage together the more cluttered it ends up. Same goes with tools, if its needed for whatever i keep the tools needed by it.

the timing on this could not have been better. since i retired and sold my old house, the place i live now has NO real space i can use as a shop. i basically have a little less than a one car garage space that i can use but i have to make things mobile and very space efficient. this gives me a LOT to think about on how i can transform the space to make it both a shop and a spot to park a car. challenge accepted!
